The Maasai people, a semi-nomadic ethnic group, are primarily located in Tanzania and Kenya. Tarangire National Park

Many a childhood would have been spent playing in the world of ‘make-believe’. Within this imaginary existence many of us will have climbed and played high up in the bows and branches and, for the lucky few, built a ‘palace’ in the sky. It is this nostalgic sparkle that is all too visible in the eyes of the ‘grown-ups’ who gaze upon Tarangire Treetops for the first time. Tarangire Treetops sits serenely on the border of the Tarangire National Park - Tanzania.

Meanwhile, Zanzibar provides an idyllic retreat, with its pristine white sand beaches, azure waters, and rich cultural heritage. The island offers a wealth of activities, such as snorkeling, exploring the spice markets, and relaxing on the beach.

In mainland Tanzania, temperatures range from 16°C to 29°C, while the islands are warmer at 23°C to 32°C. January is hot and humid, with occasional rainfall. The Southern Plains have fresh, sweet grasses for wildebeest grazing, with Ndutu and northern Ngorongoro Conservation Area being popular spots for herds to prepare for new calf births during the great migration.

Calves Season

In February, Zanzibar experiences high temperatures and low rainfall. It is the best time to see wildebeest calves in the southern Serengeti, where millions of wildebeest gather to feed and give birth. Tanzania's weather during this time can range from pleasant to very hot, with the maximum average temperature being 31°C during the day and the minimum average being 25°C at night.

Birth Season

Typically, early March is characterised by arid weather, although in some cases, the rains may resume earlier than expected. During this period, the wildebeest population is still situated in the southern region of the park, but are making arrangements to migrate northward as the grasslands become parched. For those seeking to ascend Kilimanjaro, March (as well as September/October) is commonly regarded as the optimal season. Zanzibar is entering the rainy period.

Hiking Period

As the rainy season draws to a close and the ground dries up, the herds of animals begin their journey towards the central Serengeti where they can find fresh grass to graze on and care for their young. The wildebeest, in particular, embark on a lengthy journey north, passing through the central region of the park at a relaxed pace while grazing on the abundant fresh grass. It is worth noting that this month, in particular, records the highest amount of rainfall, occurring during the peak of the long and heavy rainy season.

The Journey Begins

May signals a transition from the wet to the dry season in Tanzania, making it an ideal time for travelers to explore the Savannah or bask in the sun on the beach. Though the beginning of May still witness precipitation, the weather improves as the month progresses, making it conducive to travel by vehicle and exploration of the parks. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to witness the remarkable migration of wildebeest in the central region of the park.

Transition Month

June marks the peak season for visiting the western Serengeti, as the wildebeest migration is in full swing and the savannahs are transitioning from green to yellow. This period is ideal for observing wildlife, with an increased probability of encountering a diverse range of fauna. Visitors may witness the wildebeest congregating on the southern banks of the Grumeti River, preparing to cross the river despite the presence of crocodiles. The season is also perfect for exploring the sights of Zanzibar, including a romantic honeymoon.

High Seasons Begin

July is peak tourist season in Tanzania and Zanzibar, with significant crowds at parks and popular destinations. The Great Migration, a natural wonder, is a prominent attraction during this period, with wildebeest moving northward in the Serengeti and river crossings starting in July. Large groups of wildebeest can also be seen across the Western corridor. The first herds are expected to arrive in the North in early July.

August is a high season for tourists visiting Tanzania's northern safari circuit and Zanzibar. This time of year is ideal for wildlife viewing, and visitors can witness the herds of the Great Migration crossing the Mara River. Although the season also brings its challenges, as the dry season approaches, the wildebeest face difficulties crossing the river. Many do not survive this arduous task, but the thousands of calves born during this time compensate for the loss.

Crossing the Mara River

September still a right time to visit Tanzania due to the low humidity levels, little to no rainfall, and fewer mosquitoes. Hikers can climb Mount Kilimanjaro, wildlife enthusiasts can see elephants in Tarangire National Park, and fishing season starts in Tanzania's lake regions. Even though most herds gather in Kenya's Maasai Mara, the Serengeti still offers opportunities to see wildlife.

Hiking Time

Trekking in Tanzania during October is ideal, as the season boasts dry trails, minimal rain, and comfortable temperatures without the risk of slippery slopes or harsh cold. Both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru are viable options for climbing during this month. Additionally, this season marks the second time the wildebeest cross the Mara River before their return journey south. This is the last dry season in Zanzibar.

Idyllic Time on Zanzibar

November is a month that often goes overlooked for safaris in Tanzania. While there may be occasional afternoon thundershowers, the northern parks of Tanzania offer excellent game viewing opportunities throughout the year. Additionally, November presents a unique opportunity to explore less frequented destinations. This month marks the arrival of short rains, which signal the movement of wildebeest southward towards the lush grasslands of the Serengeti.

Green Grass of Home

December provides an excellent opportunity for birdwatching in Tanzania, as migratory birds flock to the national parks. The Great Migration has returned to the southern Serengeti's short grass plains, making it an optimal time to embark on a Serengeti Safari and witness the wildebeest as they feast and give birth to their calves. The Southern Plains, with their fresh, sweet grass, provide perfect grazing grounds, while the areas around Ndutu and the northern Ngorongoro Conservation Area serve as crucial preparation grounds for the new calves' birth.
