Set off from Paro and embark on your journey to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Upon your arrival in Thimphu, each destination reveals a piece of Bhutan's vibrant cultural fabric and spiritual legacy. The imposing Buddha Dordenma, representing peace and prosperity, towers gracefully against the skyline, while the National Memorial Chorten resonates with the lively energy of locals engaged in their daily prayers. At the Folk Heritage Museum, dive into Bhutanese traditions and witness the colorful history and everyday life of its people.

Visit Thimphu

The journey from Thimphu to Punakha is a scenic adventure, highlighted by the crisp air and rhododendron forests near Dochu La at 3,000 meters. This sacred pass offers stunning views that inspire humility and wonder. Upon reaching Punakha, you find a lush, warm valley perfect for exploration.

Passing the Dochu La Pass

Start your day with a peaceful walk past charming farmhouses and rice paddies to Chimi Lhakhang, a 15th-century fertility temple dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, the &lsquo;Divine Madman.&rsquo; Locals visit for blessings and naming ceremonies for newborns.

After this, head to Punakha Dzong, a historic 17th-century fortress that served as the government seat and is now the winter residence for Bhutan&rsquo;s chief abbot and monks. All of Bhutan's kings are crowned here before they can take their throne in Thimphu.

After lunch, walk through farmland to reach Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a modern shrine built by the royal family. A 45-minute hike leads you to this three-story lhakhang, featuring tantric Buddhist deities for protection and safety, while offering stunning valley views.

Explore Punakha

COMO's smallest, most jewel-like Uma lodge sits on a small hill at the western end of the Punakha Valley above the Mo Chhu river. It seems to breathe a different air, and is ideally located for Himalayan exploration, for village treks, temples, festivals, and whitewater rafting. Every room commands sweeping views of the Punakha Valley and the Mo Chhu as it winds its way through the rice fields and orchards.

Depart from Punakha to Paro, retracing your path through the picturesque Dochu La pass. Upon reaching Chuzom, the confluence of the Wang Chhu and Paro Chhu rivers, take a moment to admire the three nearby shrines, each reflecting a distinct architectural style: Nepali, Tibetan, and Bhutanese, all designed to ward off evil spirits. If time allows, consider visiting Tamchog Lhakhang, a temple established by Thangtong Gyalpo, an innovative engineer known for introducing suspension bridge construction in Bhutan and Tibet&mdash;many of which are still operational today.

As you make your way to COMO Uma Paro, you'll pass through delightful apple orchards and verdant rice paddies, leading you back to our serene mountain retreat, where you can relax for the remainder of the day. One exciting activity to engage in is archery, Bhutan's national sport.

Archery here is much more than a sport; it is a vibrant cultural tradition that unites communities. In villages throughout the country, archery competitions are lively occasions filled with music, dance, and joy. Participants and spectators don traditional attire, creating a festive atmosphere that celebrates both skill and togetherness.

Back to Paro and Experience Archery

Today, you will explore one of Bhutan's most renowned landmarks. Your adventure leads you to the Taktsang &lsquo;Tiger&rsquo;s Nest&rsquo; Monastery, a remarkable architectural gem of Bhutan. According to legend, this cliffside site marks the arrival of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who flew in on the back of a tigress, bringing the teachings of Buddhism from Tibet to Bhutan. It is said he journeyed from eastern Bhutan on this magical creature, imparting Buddhist wisdom and meditation at this revered locale. This site stands as one of the most esteemed and sacred Buddhist destinations globally.

The journey begins early to avoid the heat as you embark on a two-hour hike to the Tiger&rsquo;s Nest viewpoint. The challenging ascent takes you past a beautiful waterfall, leading to the monastery&rsquo;s main entrance, adorned with exquisite murals. If time allows, you can continue up to discover additional remote temples.

After your hike, you&rsquo;ll enjoy a lunch that can either be a prepared picnic or a meal from the charming Taktsang cafeteria. Alternatively, we can organise a local farmhouse lunch, allowing you to immerse yourself in an authentic Bhutanese home and savor traditional cuisine. Following lunch, you will return to COMO Uma Paro, where you can relax on your final evening by enjoying the steam rooms, gym, and swimming pool, or treat yourself to one of our rejuvenating COMO Shambhala treatments.
