Your itinerary for today includes a visit to several notable landmarks in Bhutan. These include the National Library, Textile Museum, The Weaving Centre, Buddha Point, and National Memorial Chorten. In case you have additional time, you may also explore the Institute of Traditional Medicine, the School of Arts and Crafts, the Folk Heritage Museum, and Simply Bhutan.

As you embark on your journey to these fascinating sites, take note of the unique architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture of Bhutan. At the National Library, explore an extensive collection of ancient Buddhist texts, manuscripts, and other historical documents. The Textile Museum showcases the country's intricate weaving traditions, while The Weaving Centre offers an opportunity to witness talented weavers in action. Buddha Point boasts a magnificent statue of Buddha overlooking the valley. This serene and peaceful site is perfect for a moment of reflection and appreciation of the stunning views.

The National Memorial Chorten is another must-see landmark that provides insight into Bhutan's spiritual beliefs and practices. If time permits, the Institute of Traditional Medicine provides insight into Bhutan's traditional healing practices. The School of Arts and Crafts is an excellent place to observe and learn about Bhutanese art and craftsmanship. The Folk Heritage Museum offers a glimpse into the country's rural traditions and way of life.

Explore the Capital

Commence your day with a brief morning hike to Cheri Goemba Monastery. En route back, visit the Pangri Zampa, a 16th-century edifice which now serves as a monastic school for astrologers. Upon returning to town, explore the capital's various cottage industries, ranging from traditional paper-making to hand-rolled incense. Peruse Himalayan artifacts along the main street and craft your personalized stamp at the local post office. The Craft Bazaar and Vegetable Markets are accessible during weekends.

After lunch, proceed towards the northern end of the valley to witness the Trashi Chhoe Dzong, home to the Bhutanese government and royal offices. As the sun sets, take a stroll through the Takin Animal Sanctuary, offering a breathtaking view of the Thimphu valley. According to local lore, takins are believed to be a cross between a cow and a goat.

Perched on the upper reaches of the Motithang area, the 16-suite Lodge of Amankora Thimphu is inspired by the traditional dzong fortress design. Pemako Thimphu is centrally located in the middle of the city. It’s imposing structure dominates the Thimphu’s skyline, mirroring the fortresses (Dzong) of ancient Bhutan. The traditional murals and colours adorning the walls and ceilings are a good first introduction to Bhutanese architecture. Pemako Thimphu offers comfort and luxury. Embark on a scenic drive from Thimphu to Punakha, taking in the breathtaking views of Dochu La and the famed Dochula Pass (3,100 m above sea level). En route, observe Bhutan's first monastery, Simtokha Dzong, and marvel at the wall paintings of Hongtsho Goemba Monastery. Pause at Dochu La Pass for a picnic lunch before continuing to Punakha (1,200 m above sea level).

Prior to your arrival in Punakha, a visit to Chimmi Lhakhang. The temple, which dates back to the 15th century, is dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, a Tibetan Buddhist saint also known as the &lsquo;Divine Madman.' He employed humor, songs, and dramatic reenactments to disseminate his teachings in the 15th century. The temple is widely renowned as the Temple of Fertility, and locals often visit to seek blessings from the lama. Couples seeking to conceive also come here to pray and request blessings. In addition, the temple is also a place where newborns are named. Located about a 30-minute walk from the main road, the temple can be accessed through fields.

Winding Roads and The 'Divine Madman'

Start your day to a walk-through homesteads and farmland to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a shrine recently built by the royal family. You will be guided to the suspension bridge and undertake a 45-minute hike to reach the three-story Lhakhang. This awe-inspiring edifice is a recent addition to Bhutan's array of architecturally magnificent structures. Constructed under the auspices of Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Tshering Yangdon, it enshrines representations of the tantric form of Buddhist deities that safeguard against adversaries and repel negative influences on Bhutan's people. Designed for the country's protection and the current King, Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten affords breathtaking views of the valley below.

We will provide a packed breakfast for your convenience, allowing you to relish your meal amidst the tranquil surroundings before other guests arrive on the hilltop.

The Punakha Temple

Continue the journey to visit the Punakha Dzong, which was erected in 1637. It was the second dzong to be constructed in Bhutan and served as the nation's seat of government for many years. Regarded as the most picturesque dzong in Bhutan, its towering white walls offer a stunning contrast to the verdant surroundings. The dzong holds significant importance as it is the winter residence of the central monastic body and houses a crucial relic over which several wars with Tibetans were fought. Furthermore, all of Bhutan's kings are crowned here before taking their throne in Thimphu.

On the following day, visit Chorten Ningpo, a 17th-century religious monument. Despite being relatively unknown, this site boasts a remarkable statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha, along with depictions of revered lamas of the Drukpa lineage. The area was once a dense forest, believed to be home to malevolent spirits. As legend has it, the great oak tree near the monastery grew from the log that the 'Divine Madman' had thrown, which had been engulfed in flames (as evidenced by the tree's blackened bark).

Punakha Dzong and Chorten Ningpo

COMO's smallest, most jewel-like Uma lodge sits on a small hill at the western end of the Punakha Valley above the Mo Chhu river. It seems to breathe a different air, and is ideally located for Himalayan exploration, for village treks, temples, festivals, and whitewater rafting. Every room commands sweeping views of the Punakha Valley and the Mo Chhu as it winds its way through the rice fields and orchards.

Reached by crossing a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River covered in prayer flags, Punakha Lodge incorporates a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse built by a former Je Khenpo (chief abbot of Bhutan). Continue the trip to Phobjikha (3-hour drive). Crossing Wangdue, the road once again gradually climbs to Lawa La pass, which offers the magnificent view of Mount Jhomolhari (7,326 m) and Mount Jichu Drake (6,662 m). There is an abrupt change in vegetation as you drive, with mountain forest replaced by high altitude dwarf bamboo.

Upon arrival at Phobjikha, you will be accompanied to the Gangtey Goemba, a monastery situated on a wooded hill, offering stunning views of the verdant Phobjikha valley. The temple, originally established in 1613 by Pema Thinley, the grandson and reincarnation of Pema Lingpa, has expanded over time to become the present-day Gangtey Goemba. It serves as the residence of the ninth reincarnation of the Terton Pema Lingpa.

Scenic Drive to Phobjikha

Begin your day with a refreshing walk along the Nature Trail, traversing the flower-filled meadows, pine forests, and into the open valley. Alternatively, embark on the Longtey Hike for a more strenuous trek. Make sure to visit the Black Neck Crane Center and during the season (from late October to mid-February), you might witness the black-necked crane bird, which migrates from Tibet during winter. A visit to this centre is a great way to learn about the endangered black-necked crane and the folklore that surrounds them.

Gangtey Lodge

Amankora Gangtey

In the little-visited Phobjikha Valley near the village of Gangtey, the eight-suite Amankora Gangtey Lodge is set on a forested knoll with scenic views of the valley floor and the 16th-century Gangtey Goemba monastery. Part of the Black Mountains National Park wildlife reserve, the valley is home each winter to a flock of 300 endangered black-neck cranes.

Embark on a memorable five-hour drive from Gangtey to Bumthang, traversing through a dramatic landscape of terraced farmlands, deep river gorges, and precariously perched farmhouses. Take a brief pause at the Chendebji Chorten, which is believed to have been constructed to cover the remains of a demon spirit.

As you proceed towards Trongsa, you will encounter the ancestral home of the royal family. Take a leisurely stroll around the village and explore the Trongsa Dzong if time permits. The scenic drive towards Bumthang will lead you over the picturesque Yotong La pass and down into the Chhume Valley, which is renowned for Bhutan's exquisite Yathra weaving.

Journey to the Central Bhutan

Explore Bumthang by visiting Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang, indulging in traditional food at Farmhouse Lunch, and browsing local handicraft shops. History enthusiasts can visit the Jakar Dzong fortress while others can take a dip in the natural hot springs surrounded by picturesque mountain scenery. Bumthang offers a rich cultural heritage and natural beauty to captivate any visitor.

Bumthang's Monasteries

Amankora Bumthang

Bumthang, directly translating as ‘beautiful field’, is home to 29 temples and monasteries, including the ancient Jambay Lhakhang, and is a treasure-trove of Bhutan’s art and painting traditions. The 16-suite Amankora Bumthang Lodge rests adjacent to the Wandichholing Palace, within the town of Jakar in the Choekhor Valley.

Upon landing at Paro, visiting the National Museum offers a captivating introduction to the Kingdom's cultural and historical richness. Subsequently, a brief walk downhill leads to the grand Paro Dzong, an exemplar of traditional Bhutanese architecture. After touring the Dzong, traverse the Nyamai Zampa, a classic cantilever bridge, which will take you to the town temple, constructed in 1525 AD, where you can observe ancient wall paintings.

Back to Paro

Our itinerary for the day includes a visit to Ta Dzong, the site of Bhutan's National Museum, which boasts stunning views of Paro. We will then proceed to Rinpung Dzong, also known as Fortress on a Heap of Jewels.

After driving a few kilometers north of Paro, we will visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, featuring an enchanting orange tree that bears fruit throughout the year. If time permits, we will continue driving to Drukgyel Dzong, constructed in 1648 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to regulate the northern route to Tibet. As an optional spiritual experience, your guide can arrange a butter lamp ceremony at a nearby monastery, serving as a blessing and welcome to the kingdom before returning to the resort.

Spiritual Journey

Take an unforgettable journey and hike up to the Taktsang Goemba, also known as the Tiger's Nest, situated on a sheer cliff face approximately 2,950m (9,678ft) above sea level. The four-hour ascent boasts awe-inspiring views of the sacred monastery, elevated 900 m above the valley floor. If you prefer a less strenuous trek, mules and donkeys are available to assist, and your guide will confirm your preference beforehand. As you make your way up the rocky mountain path, you will pass through a beautiful forest of pine trees and rhododendrons. Your guide will share stories and legends about the monastery and its significance to Bhutanese culture and history. You will also see several prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, adding to the spiritual atmosphere of the hike.

Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Paro Valley and the surrounding mountains. The Taktsang Goemba itself is a magnificent sight, with its elaborate architecture and intricate detail. Inside, you will find several temples and shrines, each one adorned with colorful murals and precious relics.
